Stefan Engels will appear in concert on Sunday, October 17, 6:00 pm in a free recital
For his St. Louis Cathedral Recital on Sunday, October 17, at 6:00 pm, Mr. Engels will present a program entitled “Organ Works from the Great Leipzig Organ Tradition.” It will include works such as Bach’s transcription of Vivaldi’s Concerto in C Major (the concerto Grosso Mogul), as well as works by Sigfried Karg-Elert, Felix Mendelssohn, Max Reger, and Karl Rover. In contrast to the organ composers of the French Romantic period, many late 19thcentury organ composers from the German cultural sphere remained practically unknown until recently. In addition to being obscured by the overwhelming significance of Max Reger, they were also the victims of the organ revival movement in Germany, which frowned upon the romantic and late-romantic eras. It was not until the 1970’s, when the masterworks of composers such as Karg-Elert and Rover began to be rediscovered. The concert will be free and open to the public. |
