Bach and his son, C.P.E. Bach

For their recital on Sunday, November 15 at 6:00 pm, at St. Mary’s Church, 1100 Chartres St., Paul Goussot, harpsichord, Joseph Meyer, Concert Master of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, and Jaren Philleo, first oboist of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra will perform the Double Concerto for Violin & Oboe in C-minor and the Violin & Harpsichord Sonata No 4 in C-minor of J. S. Bach. C. P. E. Bach will be represented on the program by the Oboe & Harpsichord Sonata in G-minor and the Trio sonata in D-moll. The concert will be free and open to the public.

While Johann Sebastian Bach (1684-1750) is generally considered to be the culmination of baroque music, his second son, Carl Philipp Emanuel (1714-1788) is often considered to be the founder of the classical style.

Paul Goussot, harpsichordist, studied at the Paris Conservatory where he won seven first prizes: harpsichord, continuo, organ, harmony, counterpoint, fugue, form and improvisation. Popular as a recitalist, he has performed at the Chapelle Royale de Versailles, the Festival Couperin de Champs sur Marne, the Théâtre du Renard, Notre Dame Cathedral and serves as accompanist and coach for various instrumental ensembles such as Les Arts Florissants. In 2009, upon the establishment of a joint program of the St. Louis Cathedral and the Paris Conservatory, he was named the Cathedral’s first Young Artist in Residence.

Joseph Meyer, violin, has garnered acclaim as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral leader. Mr. Meyer is concert master of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and associate concertmaster of the Colorado Music Festival. Previously, he has served as associate concertmaster of the Charlotte Symphony, guest concertmaster at both the New World Symphony and the Louisville Orchestra, and member of the San Francisco Symphony.

Jaren Philleo, oboe, is currently the principal oboist of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. She joined the LPO after her graduate studies at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University where she studied with Robert Atherholt. Ms. Philleo has served as principal oboist of the Sarasota Opera for two seasons. She has performed with the Washington Chamber Symphony, the Spoleto Festival Orchestra and recently appeared at the Marlboro Music Festival and Grand Teton’s Music Festival.

In addition to the Catholic Cultural Heritage Center, funding for this program is provided by the Elise Murray Cambon Memorial Fund of the St. Louis Cathedral.

The Performers

Paul Goussot, harpsichordist, began his musical studies at the Bordeaux Conservatory in harpsichord and organ. Continuing his studies at the Paris Conservatory, he won seven first prizes: harpsichord, continuo, organ, harmony, counterpoint, fugue, form and improvisation. The winner of numerous competitions, he was a scholar of both the Meyer Foundation and the Adami Foundation.

In popular demand as a recitalist, Mr. Goussot has performed at the Chapelle Royale de Versailles, the Festival Couperin de Champs sur Marne, the Théâtre du Renard, Notre Dame Cathedral and as accompanist and coach for various instrumental ensembles including Les Arts Florissants, Opera Fuoco and La Symphonie du Marais. In 2007, after an international competition, he was appointed Titular Organist of the historic Dom Bredos Organ (built in 1748) at the Abbey of Sainte-Croix.

The San Francisco Classical Voice described him as “a standout player, both technically brilliant and musically innovative.” The Miami Herald has called his solo playing “exquisite,” while the Boston Globe described his chamber music performance of the Carter String Quartet #1 as “an extraordinary event.”

As a member of the Minnesota Contemporary Ensemble, he performed across the United States in critically acclaimed concerts that emphasized new music. The group’s debut recording on the Innova label was called “a tour de force of technical ability and engaging new music” by the Star Tribune of Minneapolis.

Jaren Philleo, oboe, is currently the principal oboist of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. Born and raised in Fairbanks, Alaska, she joined the LPO after her graduate studies at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University where she studied with Robert Atherholt. Prior to that she studied with John Mack at the Cleveland Institute of Music where earned her Bachelor’s degree.

Prior to obtaining her position with the LPO, Ms. Philleo was the principal oboist of the Sarasota Opera for two seasons. She has appeared as a soloist with the Fairbanks Symphony, Washington Chamber Symphony in Kennedy Center and the Spoleto Festival Orchestra. During the Summer, 2009, she performed at the Marlboro Music Festival in Vermont as well as at the Grand Teton’s Music Festival in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. She currently teaches oboe and coaches chamber music at Tulane University.
