Beginning on Monday, Oct. 25 at 8 a.m., weather permitting, City of New Orleans Department of Public Works contractor, Hard Rock Construction, will temporarily close the 300 and 400 blocks of Bourbon Street, as well as the 800 blocks of Conti Street, to vehicular traffic in order to accommodate utility upgrades at Bourbon and Conti streets and permanent paving from utility work that was completed earlier this year at Bourbon and Bienville streets.
The temporary closures will be in place through 5 p.m. on Sat. Oct. 30, and all businesses remain open and accessible throughout construction.
This work is part of a $2.4M full-depth reconstruction (replacement of the roadway and underground utilities) project in the 700 block of Conti between Bourbon and Royal streets. To date, crews have replaced and upsized the existing drain lines and catch basins, replaced the existing water lines, repaired and/or replaced the existing sewer lines and completed the new concrete roadway and granite curbs. Entergy Gas and Entergy Electric have replaced the existing low pressure gas lines with high pressure gas lines and replaced and/or repaired the existing underground electrical duct banks.
Currently, crews are constructing sidewalks and Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant ramps at the intersections of Royal and Conti streets and Bourbon and Conti streets.
The 700 block of Conti Street project, which was designed by Mott McDonald, LLC is anticipated to run through November 2021. Project partners include Entergy Electric, Entergy Gas, Cox Communications and AT&T.
The 600 block of Conti Street between Royal and Chartres Street was originally included as part of this project; however, it has been removed and will be bid out through a separate project in spring 2022. Entergy Gas and Entergy Electric are in the process of completing their utilities upgrades in this block.
Since May 2018, the Department of Public Works has completed 99 projects with an estimated value of $282M. Today, 69 projects are under construction with an estimated value of more than $600M.
