French Quarter Road Closure: Friday, May 22, 2020

On Friday, May 22 at 8 a.m. weather permitting, City of New Orleans, Department of Public Works’ construction contractor, Hard Rock Construction, LLC will intermittently close the intersection of Conti and Chartres streets to vehicular traffic to verify the location, depth and size of the utility lines underneath the roadway. This activity is anticipated to be completed on Saturday, May 23 at which point the intersection will reopen to vehicular traffic. Public safety is our priority; commuters are asked to be mindful of workers and to travel at reduced speeds in this area.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING EXPLORATORY TRENCHING

  • Intermittent road and sidewalk closures, construction equipment, orange fencing/cones, limited parking availability, elevated noise levels, dust, continuous vibration monitoring;
  • Temporary asphalt pavement over the completed trench.

The City is in the process of designing a full reconstruction project of Conti Street between Bourbon and Chartres streets. Entergy Gas and Entergy Electric will upgrade their utilities in advance of the city’s project to avoid conflicts during construction and potential construction delays. Their work is anticipated to begin in the 700 block of Conti Street in the June time frame. The entire project is expected to take approximately 10 months to complete.
