NOPD Chief Harrison Appoints New Leadership in Third, Eighth Police Districts

NOPD Superintendent Michael Harrison announced new senior leadership appointments today (Nov. 8) for the Third and Eighth Police Districts.

Jeff Walls, who currently serves as the Commander of the Eighth District, will become Commander of the Third District. Under this assignment, Walls will oversee police services for the Lakeview, Gentilly and West End neighborhoods, encompassing Dillard University, Southern University of New Orleans, Delgado Community College, University of New Orleans and City Park. He replaces Commander Gary Marchese, who retired this month after 28 years of service.

Walls is a 19-year veteran of the NOPD and he has served as the Eighth District Commander since 2011. He has an Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice from Bishop State Community College (AL), a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice from Loyola University – New Orleans, and he’s currently working on a Master’s in Homeland Security at Tulane University.

Third District residents are encouraged to meet Commander Walls at the upcoming Third District NONPACC meeting, or New Orleans Neighborhood Police Anti-Crime Council meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, November 15 at 6 p.m. at the Third District Station, located at 4650 Paris Avenue.

Nicholas Gernon, who currently serves as the Assistant Commander of the Sixth District, will become Commander of the Eighth District. Under this assignment, Gernon will oversee police services for the historic French Quarter, parts of the Marigny neighborhood and Central Business District, including Harrah’s Casino, Canal Place and Bourbon Street. The Eighth District sees the majority of the more than 9 million tourists who visit New Orleans every year.

Gernon is a 14-year veteran of the NOPD. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from the University of New Orleans.

Eighth District residents are encouraged to meet Commander Gernon at the upcoming Eighth District NONPACC meeting, scheduled for November 22 at 6 p.m. at the Eighth District Station, located at 334 Royal Street.
