Marigny, French Quarter, Central Business District

Traffic Restrictions

Residents and visitors should expect heavy vehicular and pedestrian traffic in the Central Business District, French Quarter, and Marigny throughout the New Year’s Eve and Allstate Sugar Bowl events. The New Orleans Police Department will restrict vehicular traffic in and around the French Quarter as follows:

NO VEHICULAR TRAFFIC ALLOWED

8pm – 4am overnight Thursday, Dec. 30 thru Saturday, Jan. 1

  • Dauphine St. at all intersections from Iberville St. to St. Ann St.
  • Royal St. at all intersections from Iberville St. to St. Ann St.
  • 700-800 blocks of St. Ann St., Orleans Ave., St. Peter St., Toulouse St., St. Louis St., Conti St., Bienville St., and Iberville St.
  • Bourbon St. at all intersections from Iberville St. to St. Ann St.
  • All streets starting with Dumaine Street toward Esplanade Avenue will be open to cross Bourbon Street

1pm – 5pm Friday, Dec. 31 (Allstar Sugar Bowl Parade Route)

  • Elysian Fields Ave. from Decatur St. to N. Peters St.
  • N. Peters St. from Elysian Fields Ave. to Canal St.

8pm – 4am overnight Monday, Dec. 31

  • Decatur St. from Canal St. to Dumaine St.

VEHICULAR TRAFFIC LIMITED TO RESIDENTS, EMPLOYEES, HOTEL GUESTS, AND TAXIS/TNCS

  • Dauphine Street at all intersections from Iberville Street to St. Ann Street
  • Royal Street at all intersections from Iberville Street to St. Ann Street
  • Bourbon Street and Canal Street
  • Bourbon Street and Dumaine Street
  • All intersections will be manned.
  • Vehicles should be made aware that they will not be able to cross Bourbon Street
  • All streets starting with Dumaine Street toward Esplanade Avenue will be open to cross Bourbon Street

Additional intermittent street closures, including Canal St. from Claiborne Ave. to Convention Center Blvd., might be required as crowd size warrants. Decatur St. from Dumaine St. to St. Louis St. will also be closed to vehicles ahead of the fireworks display on Friday, Dec. 31 once crowd size warrants.

8am – 5pm on Friday, Dec. 31 

  • Elysian Fields Ave. (riverbound side only) from Burgundy St. to N. Peters St.
  • N. Peters St. from Elysian Fields Ave. to Dumaine St.

8am – 4 am overnight on Friday, Dec. 31 

  • Decatur St. from Dumaine St. to Conti St.
  • N. Peters St. from Conti St. to Canal St.

Parking enforcement personnel will be monitoring for illegal parking.

  • Do not block hydrants, driveways and sidewalks.
  • Do not park within 20 feet of a crosswalk, intersection, or stop sign.
  • Park in the direction of travel on one-way streets and with the right wheel to the curb on two-way streets.

Transportation Impacts & Tips for Getting There

Regional Transit Authority (RTA) service impacts

The New Orleans Regional Transit Authority will adjust service along some bus routes and the Algiers Point – Canal Street ferry route due to planned New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day festivities.

All bus and streetcar routes will operate on a Sunday schedule on New Year’s Eve (Friday, December 31) and New Year’s Day (Saturday, January 1). Normal bus and streetcar service will resume on Sunday, January 2, following a Sunday schedule.

Some bus routes will be on detour due to expected service impacts in downtown New Orleans, see the specific route changes below. Temporary signage will be posted at affected stops along detoured routes informing riders of the specific changes.

All Day, Friday, Dec. 31

  • #5 Marigny-Bywater & #55 Elysian Fields
    Both services will stop at Elysian Fields due to Decatur St. being closed for the day.

2pm – 5pm, Friday, Dec. 31

  • #10 Tchoupitoulas & #11 Magazine
    Both services will stop at Camp St. and Poydras St.
  • #16 Claiborne
    Service will be on detour from Carondelet St. to Canal St. to St. Charles Ave. and back to the normal route.

Friday, Dec. 31: Ferry Service along the Canal Street

  • Algiers Point route will be extended from 11:00 pm to 11:30 pm.
  • Service will then be suspended from 11:30 pm, December 31, 2021, until 12:30 am, January 1, 2022, due to closure of the river for the New Year’s Eve fireworks display.
  • Ferry service will resume at 12:30 am and be extended until 1:30 am to facilitate transportation of passengers after the event.
